Learning Disability Courses

Introduction to learning disability

This course looks at the nature of courses of learning disability, including consideration of the historical context, causes and impact of learning disability and associated conditions e.g. autism, epilepsy.

Autism and autistic spectrum disorders

This course will look at what autism is, the autistic spectrum and the Triad of Impairments. This course enables learners to consider what it is like to live with this complex condition and to explore positive working practices.

Understanding epilepsy

This course introduces delegates to the causes, types and presentation of epilepsy. We discuss different treatments of the condition, management of the condition and the recovery position.

Mental Health in Learning disability

This course helps delegates to consider all aspects of mental ill health and the vulnerability factors of people with learning disabilities. The role of assessment tools in the treatment of people with dual diagnosis will also be looked at.

Learning disability and self harm

This course will help delegates understand the reasons behind self- harm in learning disabilities and approaches to its management.

Mandatory Courses

Safeguarding Adults

This course looks at types of abuse, signs and indicators of abuse and risk factors associated with abuse. It provides guidance on legislation and multi-agency policies and procedures. Delegates are given opportunity to discuss and analyse serious case reviews and consider the concept of safeguarding.

Health and Safety

This course studies responsibility and accountability in regard to health and safety. Delegates are encouraged to look at their own practices and ensure this meets regulatory and legislative standards

Infection Control

This course ensures delegates understanding of good practice and responsibilities in infection control. It covers the chain of infection, risk management and control measures.

First Aid

This course meets the requirements from HSE in emergency first aid at work. It covers the role of a first aider, action to take in emergencies such as bleeding, shock, stroke, seizures, choking, fractures and burns. Delegates will also practice and be assessed on the recovery position and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Moving and Handling

This course provides delegates with the legal requirements for employers and employees. Delegates will gain an understanding of the impact and nature of musculo-skeletal disorders and be given guidance on best practice of moving and handling.

Moving and handling people-

We also deliver a longer course in moving and handling of people where delegates practice using equipment.

Other Courses

Understanding Dementia

This course provides a broad understanding of the different types and characteristics of dementia and the importance of getting an accurate diagnosis. It considers how staff approach can impact on a person’s experience of dementia.

We also delivery training in Dementia and Downs syndrome.

Behaviours that challenge

This course helps learning to understand why people display challenging behaviours, the stages of emotional arousal and strategies to managing challenging behaviour.

Mental Capacity Act/Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)

This course examines issues around capacity and consent set within the legal framework. It considers when capacity should be tested and the application process for DoLS.

Medicines awareness

This course, accredited with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, looks at all aspects of medication within a variety of care and support settings. It covers the legislation and best practice guidance for managing medication together with safe administration, receipt, storage and disposal.

We also offer the following:

•           NCFE accredited Safe Handling of Medicines level 2 Certificate 

•           A 4 day train the trainer course in person-centred medicines management with a competency toolkit. (booked through OPTIMUM)

Food safety

This course provides delegates with a basic understanding of safe food hygiene practice. It looks at legal requirements, handling, preparing, storage, cooking and disposal of food.

We also deliver the CIEH accredited Level 2 Award in Food Safety (full day)

Record keeping

This course identifies the importance of records in the Health and Social Care setting within the legal context. It will also cover how to write good records and what poor records look like.

Person centred approaches

This course introduces the delegates to the principles of person centred care and support and the values which underpin this approach. It considers the benefits of risk taking, active participation, and what is important to the person and for the person.

Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

This course explores the definitions of equality, diversity and inclusion and their relevance within health and social care. It encourages delegates to consider the impact of discrimination and how EDI can be promoted in the workplace.

Care Certificate

The care certificate was introduced in April 2015 as a mandatory requirement for all new workers. It is intended to improve knowledge and competency of health and social care workers.
